7 things you should watch if you are a game dev

Hello, everyone!

This time I bring you some recommendations of things I believe you should watch if you are a game dev or an aspiring game dev. All of these are ones I had watched so I may miss stuff I didn’t know about so feel free to leave in the comments if you have any recommendations! (Is this a trick to get new stuff to watch? Maybe…)

So let’s begin with a classic!

Indie Game The Movie

This movie was the first one I watched since it became almost the way to make this kind of movie. I think it is a great inspirational movie, in my opinion, though it also shows the struggles of different developers through independent video game making. In case you don’t know, it talks about the development of Super Meat Boy, Fez, and Braid. Surely a must-see for any aspiring game developer!

Amnesia Fortnight

I think that any series involving game jams is really interesting. Not only that, here you can see a lot of technical knowledge from senior developers that are pouring into making a game during two weeks and coming up with some great-looking new games. Even more, some of them became full games developed by the company thanks to the potential they saw in those.

People Make Games

It isn’t exactly about developing games but the people behind developing games. I think it has been a great channel that does wonderful work at investigating different situations in the videogame industry and tries to bring that information to the general public.

Noclip

Awesome channel that publishes videogame documentaries in a more frequent way and has access to not only small indie game developers but also huge companies. I had found this channel not only inspiring but that provides also a lot of insight on how some big developers in the industry think.

Branching Paths

Since Japan and indie game development are my weakness, there is no doubt that this documentary was going to be included in the list. Apart from my weakness, I do really recommend it since it highlights teh struggles of independent developers trying to create innovative and meaningful games while being part of a country known for its gaming industry.

Double Fine Adventure!

Another Double Fine saga. This is not an indie development since it has a big budget and team behind it, but it is truly interesting the efforts the whole company makes to achieve monetary independence while developing Broken Age.

Game Maker’s Toolkit

I think that is very interesting the wide range of topics this channel has. Most of the topics are related to game design but it covers a really wide range like level design, storytelling and game mechanics. Apart from that, now he is making a new game from scratch and sharing his experience with a really high-quality narrative.

That’s it! I have other stuff that I also recommend a lot so maybe a second part post will be coming in the near future. Do you have any recommendations? Please leave a comment if you do!
